In Chinese medicine the fall season is connected to the metal element and is associated with the lungs and large intestine. The associated climate is dryness, the associated tissue is the skin, the associated orifice is the nose, the associated color is white and the associated emotion is sadness. It is also the time to bring your energy inward and a good time to further develop your self-discipline and organizational skills.
What does all this mean?
First, if you have any issues with your lungs and large intestine they may get exacerbated during the fall season. For example, you may experience allergies, can catch cold easily or experience more severe issues with your breathing and your lungs. You may also have trouble with your bowel movements, like constipation.
The Dryness in the air may also affect your skin. Your skin may feel dry and itchy at times. The dryness can also affect your large intestine, which can cause dry stools and constipation,.
What are some things that you can do?
Saving and Soothing Your Lung Energy
If your lung energy is low, excessive talking, singing or playing a woodwind instrument can tax the lung energy. In the same way that blinking and closing your eyes help keep moisture in and prevent dryness, keeping silent for longer periods of time can help save your long energy. Some people may choose to do a silent meditation retreat or simply set a period of time when you do not speak. Singer Celine Dion once injured her vocal chords and chose to rest them for three weeks instead of getting surgery. She also began to drink lukewarm liquids to help soothe her throat.
Breathing Exercises
There are many different types of the breathing exercises that can help your lungs and large intestine. Simply relaxing your chest and breathing into your abdomen is a good place to start. You can inhale for a certain number of seconds, hold the breath with the same number and then exhale with the same count. For example, inhale for four seconds, hold the breath for four seconds and then exhale for four seconds. You can gradually increase the time. There are dozens of Qigong exercises that specifically target the lungs and large intestine. Here are a few that you can learn and follow on my YouTube channel.
Humidifier and Diffuser
Having a good quality humidifier or an essential oil diffuser can help with the dryness indoors; adding the essential oil eucalyptus (globulus or radiata) may also benefit the lungs.
Staying hydrated
We are often more conscious about drinking enough water during the hot summer months but we may not be as diligent as the weather gets colder. In addition to drinking enough water, I found that the supplement MagO7can be helpful in bringing more water to the large intestine. This can be particularly helpful if you’re experiencing dry stools or constipation. Taking an internal collagen supplement may also help your skin and connective tissue, which may also feel dry and stiff in the fall and winter.
If you find your face becoming dry from the air or the sun, Swan Princess Odette’s Dainty Serum works quickly to hydrate and protect your skin. Despite the name, both men and women have reported immediate positive effects.

Self-Discipline, Harm Reduction and Organization
The fall season can be a good time to develop your self-discipline muscles. Take a moment of introspection. Which areas of your life could use more self-discipline? Let’s start with the basics, getting more sleep?, the food you eat?, exercise?, breaking a bad habit?, balancing work and play?
