The concepts of Yin and Yang and the Five Elements/Phases (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) are often used to describe the relationships of our organs and their connection to the environment. For instance, each season corresponds to different elements/phases and their corresponding organs.
Spring connects to Wood (Liver & Gallbladder)
Summer connects to Fire (Heart & Small Intestine)
Fall connects to Metal (Lungs and Large Intestine)
Winter connects to Water (Kidneys and Urinary Bladder)
Where does Earth (Spleen & Stomach) fit in?
Earth is commonly connected to late summer but it is actually late every season. At the end of each season, energy returns to Earth for regeneration and replenishment. The Earth (Spleen & Stomach) is considered your Center and is in charge of your digestion, which includes getting nutrients and energy from your food as well as transforming your thinking to positive thoughts. Late summer is a good time to check in with your center as you prepare yourself for the fall and winter seasons to come.
Check in with your diet, exercise routine, your work, your hobbies and your core values. You can start with your diet since it is the Earth that will nourish all other organs and give you energy each day. Regardless of your diet, the Earth prefers a regular eating schedule with moderate portions eating until you are about 70% full.
In the same way, the Earth prefers clear thinking that is inline with your core and can get out of balance from overthinking and worry. This in turn can affect different organ systems including digestion as well as behavior patterns like being clingy, wishy washy or obsessive.
In my recent eMOTIONS class on overthinking and worry, part of the Yin Yang of Your Emotions Series, we discuss various cognitive-behavioral strategies along with Chinese medicine modalities, such as acupressure and qigong, that can alleviate worry and anxiety and help you be more centered and grounded.
Also, the use of Acuformulas on specific acupuncture points can elicit rapid shifts towards feeling more calm and balanced. The combination of essential oils, herbs and homeopathy, give you the power of aromatherapy and acu-point stimulation which have tangible therapeutic effects on the body, mind and spirit.
There are five Acuformulas that correspond with each of the Five Elements. Acuformulaยฎ T5 (Green Dragon-Wood), A7 (Bronze/Red Dragon-Fire), N6 (Yellow Dragon-Earth), R5 (White Dragon-Metal), and H5 (Blue Dragon-Water).
The Yellow Dragon, N6, which includes basil, ginger, nutmeg, peppermint and lavender is particularly helpful for digestive issues like nausea by applying to points like Stomach 36, Pericardium 6 and Ren/CV 12.
When the Earth (Spleen & Stomach) is weak and out of balance, the body can accumulate dampness, which can manifest in different ways. The Yellow Dragon can help with the physical and mental imbalances caused by dampness in the body. For example, certain types of pain and muscle knots and clouded or foggy thinking may be alleviated.
Several practitioners have told me that it also helps their patients get relief from bug bites. As a way to connect to your center during late summer, you can apply the Yellow Dragon to Stomach 36 & 40, Large Intestine 10 and Spleen 3 & 5 for grounding, clearing damp and an overall immune boost.*
