The vita in vitamin is Latin for life. Vitamins are essential organic compounds that are needed for normal growth in humans. Most of us are aware that we need to eat a variety of whole foods to get the necessary vitamins, like Vitamin A, B( 1–12), C, D, E, K, etc. for good health. Vitamin D3, which helps with calcium absorption, can be produced in the body from specific ultraviolet rays from the sun. Modern farming techniques, chemicals, pesticides and picking fruits and vegetables before they are ripened all negatively affect our vitamin availability.
Since the 1980’s when I made self-cultivation and serving others a conscious life path decision, I chose to supplement my various diets with whole, food grade herbs instead of isolated, chemically based vitamins.
Finding the right foods and supplements for your body can be a lifelong process that ebbs and flows with aging and the seasons. It can be an uphill battle at times given all the different factors involved with food, eating habits and gut health. I am very grateful to my T’ai Chi Ch’uan brothers and sisters who inspired me to become more conscious of my food choices and nutrition.
Recently, I had a lunch meeting with an old friend with whom I taught weekly meditation classes in the early 1990’s. As a palm reader, teacher and spiritual guide, he has helped me and tens of thousands connect to parts of our souls that may have otherwise remained in the shadow. During our lunch meeting, he spoke of the importance of Vitamin L and shared some ways to nourish self-love using intention and affirmations. It may seem obvious and cliché that LOVE may be the most important vitamin of all for your body, mind and spirit. But it cannot be repeated or stressed enough.
Another vitamin to help the mind is one of my favorites, Vitamin H. Humor was a vitamin I grew up with and like Vitamin B, I found there were different types. My father gave us daily doses of vitamin H1, which helped you cope with complex world issues but also lightened the mood at the dinner table. My mother’s humor, Vitamin H3, added a sharp wit and often a cutting sarcasm that could be dangerous in large doses, like Vitamin E. If you think about the various forms of comedy and the comedians that have made you laugh, you will see that there are many types of Vitamin H, all of which can literally help the brain and in turn the body and spirit.
When we think of nourishing the spirit we may think of prayer, meditation, communing with nature, reading spiritual passages, singing or listening to spiritual music, or engaging in another creative activity in which you lose your self and connect with something greater and larger than the conventional daily reality. All of the above can give you a feeling of enlightenment even if it is fleeting.
Several vitamins are needed regularly to nourish your spirit. The other Vitamin K, kindness, is one that can be extremely helpful in times of stress. Being kind to yourself and others can transform anger and frustration. Spirit vitamins are most nutritious when you not only take them for yourself but you share them with others through both words and actions.
Vitamin G1, gratitude, for any and everything you can think of, has become more popular in recent years and can be a helpful reminder when the going gets tough. Vitamin G2, gentleness, like kindness, is best when you are both gentle to yourself and others.
Vitamin T, trust, and Vitamin F, faith, are perhaps the two most important for your spiritual development and finding both inner peace and acceptance of all that there is. If you ever read the nutritional facts labels on the foods you buy, you may notice some vitamins have lower percentage rates than others. Some foods have more of a specific vitamin and may have 0% of others. Trust and faith are often harder to find in higher percentages.
In Chinese medicine the heart is sometimes synonymous with your mind, is the home of your spirit, connects with all of your emotions, the environment and creativity and is considered the ruler of your body, mind and spirit. I found that the heart is also your primary inner child and can be broken into pieces from insults and traumas leaving behind several inner children with the power of a king or queen. In order to absorb more Vitamin T and F one’s heart and inner children need to receive the love and nourishment that is missing.
Much of my work focuses on helping people heal their hearts and finding balance within their inner kingdom. Healing your heart will help you have more trust in yourself and faith in spirit, however that is experienced and expressed by you.
Understanding, or better yet, feeling the oneness and interconnectedness of all things near and far can remind you that you are never truly alone, despite how our small minds may feel this way more often than we care to admit.
Perhaps think of someone who has an abundance of the vitamin you need and reach out to them for a quick fix. If it is someone who has passed on, imagine they are there with you. What would you want to say to them? What would they say to you?
So remember to be mindful that you are getting a balanced serving of all of your vitamins for your body, mind and spirit.
