In Chinese medicine, summer is associated the Fire Element/Phase. It is a good time to address any health issues with your Heart and Small Intestine and a time to feel Joy. The Heart is the home of your Shen or Spirit so it is also a good time to work on your mind and soul.
The saying, “the eyes are the window of the soul”, is more literal than you might have thought. First, when someone is suffering with a serious mental illness, one can often see the disturbance of their spirit in their eyes. Did you know that even prolonged staring can have a negative effect on one’s spirit and heart.?
The Heart energy also helps you connect appropriately to your environment and situation which is often difficult for those with mental health issues. The Heart is considered the Sovereign Ruler and any disturbance whether physical or emotional will also affect the functions of all the other organs.
Whether it is from early childhood traumas or insults or current events triggering your survival instincts, summer is a great time to do deep healing while having fun doing it. Astrologically a lot is going on this year. At the moment, Mercury is in retrograde until July 12 th and is a good time for self-reflection.
In Chinese medicine, one’s health and wellness are intimately connected to the external environment as well as your internal environment. Part of the external environment refers to the seasons and the climatic effects each season has on the body, mind and spirit. The internal environment includes your emotions, thoughts and beliefs, which also connect differently to each season.
When we have an illness or imbalance in one season that is not resolved, it gets carried over into the next season. Sometimes if not dealt with appropriately you may have to wait for a year and the return of the original season to get full relief if you survive. Exploring alternative and complementary treatments and making lifestyle changes can potentially bring more balance to your health. One of my passions has been to help people deepen their understanding of their emotions and how they affect your body, mind and spirit.
Our current pandemic is causing many physical symptoms that are crossing the borders of both countries and seasons. Not only are we facing the physical effects of how this virus may manifest with the change of seasons but we are seeing the emotional changes as well.
The emotion fear, which is associated with winter and the emotion anger, which is associated with spring, are being carried over into our summer season. Perhaps the protests and actions being taken for social justice are ways to channel these unresolved emotions.
